1971年4月5日に発売され、オリコンでは週間10位、1971年度年間46位を記録した楽曲です。タイトルは「素晴らしい」と誤記されることが多い一方、クレジットは「素晴しい」とされています。
この曲は、女性デュオ「シモンズ」のデビュー曲として用意され、加藤和彦が作曲に1日、北山修が作詞に1日で仕上げた、という経緯が語られています。ところが最終的にシモンズには別曲（恋人もいないのに）が用意され、この曲は加藤・北山の歌として世に出ました。
当時、東芝音楽工業がザ・フォーク・クルセダーズ再結成を狙って2人に働きかけたことが、オリジナル録音のきっかけだったとされます。2人はそれを望まず、シングルのジャケットでカメラを無視する演出をし、抗議の意味を込めたと当時のラジオ番組で語ったとされています。
オリジナル版では、加藤和彦による変則スリーフィンガーが展開されることでも知られます。またこの曲はカバーされ続け、中学校の音楽教科書に掲載されたことがあり、合唱用編曲も多く、2000年代以降も合唱コンクールの定番曲として扱われています。さらに2002年・2003年の「FNS27時間テレビ みんなのうた」のテーマ曲にも使用されました。
近年では、映画『トノバン 音楽家 加藤和彦とその時代』関連の作品集から「あの素晴しい愛をもう一度〜2024Ver.」が発表され、Team Tonoban名義で新録され、2024年4月24日に先行配信、作品集に収録されています。

Originally released on April 5, 1971, this song reached No. 10 on the Oricon weekly chart and ranked No. 46 on Oricon’s 1971 year-end chart. The title is officially written in Japanese as “素晴しい” (an older spelling), which is often mistakenly modernized to “素晴らしい.”
One often-told backstory is that the song was first prepared as the debut single for the female duo “Simmons.” Kazuhiko Kato reportedly wrote the music in one day, and Osamu Kitayama wrote the lyrics in one day. In the end, however, Simmons debuted with a different song (“Koibito mo Inai no ni”), and “Ano Subarashii Ai o Mou Ichido” was released as a song by Kato and Kitayama themselves.
Another well-known episode is that Toshiba Music Industry approached the two with hopes of reuniting The Folk Crusaders, and that this situation became the trigger for the original recording. It is also said that, because they did not want a reunion, the single jacket photo deliberately avoids looking at the camera as a form of protest (as discussed on radio at the time).
Musically, the original recording is also known for Kazuhiko Kato’s distinctive, unconventional three-finger guitar style. Over the decades, the song has been covered repeatedly, has appeared in Japanese middle-school music textbooks, and has become a staple in choral arrangements and choir competitions. It was also used as the theme song for “FNS 27-Hour TV: Minna no Uta” in 2002 and 2003.
More recently, a newly recorded “Ano Subarashii Ai o Mou Ichido ~2024 Ver.~” was released under the name “Team Tonoban” in connection with the film “Tonoban: Musician Kazuhiko Kato and His Era,” with an advance digital release on April 24, 2024, and included in the related compilation.
